The Galician Conference and Exhibition Centre welcomes Margal Ulla presentation conference next Thursday from 9:00 hours onwards. The conference will be closed with the constitution of the project’s working group.
The Rural Ministry in the Galician Government coordinates, through the General Direction for Nature Conservation, the project Margal Ulla in order to recover the naiad –Margaritifera margaritifera- and the freshwater desman –Galemys pyrenaicus- in the Ulla River basin. This project also counts on the participation of Augas de Galicia and the University of Santiago de Compostela.
Next Thursday, different experts on Margal Ulla’s main species and the people in charge of the project are going to discuss, in Santiago de Compostela, the first actions that were undertaken within the Framework of this iniciative implementation, under the protection of the financial instrument Life, in order to recover the freshwater naiad –Margaritifera, margaritifera- and the Iberian desman –Galemys pyrenaicus- in the Ulla River basin.
This project’s presentation conference, which will also serve to launch its web site, will start at 9.30 a.m. with the contribution of Ricardo García-Borregón Millán, director general of the Nature Conservancy; Francisco Menéndez Iglesias, chair of Augas de Galicia; and professor doctor Pablo Ramil Rego, deputy pro vice-chancellor of the USC Research and Innovation.
At 10.00 hours, the head of the Service of Biodiversity Conservation of the General Direction for Nature Conservancy, professor doctor Jesús Santamarina Fernández, will present the main objectives and actions that will be carried out in the project Margal Ulla, thus handing over to two experts, who will talk about the problems of the conservation of the freshwater naiad –Margaritifera, margaritifera- and the Iberian desman –Galemys pyrenaicus-. This issue will be discussed by professor doctor Mª Paz Ondina Navarret, who is incumbent professor of the Department of Zoology and Physical Anthropology of the University of Santiago de Compostela; and and professor doctor Jorge González Esteban, of Environmental and Territorial Studies.
The conference will be closed with a round table that will tackle the analysis of the results of other projects Life containing similar characteristics to Margal Ulla or that were also developed (or that are still been developed) in Galicia. These ones will be discussed by José Luís Gutiérrez García, expert of the Natural Spaces and Protected Species Section of Zamora, of the Board of Castile and Leon, who will present the details of the project Life Naiad; Ruth González Reyes, expert of management and planning in the Cooperation Service of Pontevedra Deputation, who will share the first experiences of the project Atlantic Vineyards with those present; and the expert of the Institute of Economic and Social Development from Lugo, professor doctor Laura Vázquez Janeiro, who will talk about the project Parga-Ladra-Támoga.
